Questions to the Actor

as posed on goodreads

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

I don’t have to get an idea for a book because my job is to select the stories that I have learned from readers that they want to know more about. Many of my readers want to hear more about the detectives trying to solve the homicide cases. Other readers are more interested in the courtroom drama and learning what went on behind the scenes especially in the judges chambers. I try to provide the reader what they want to learn about and give them a new viewpoint that they hadn’t thought about.

How do you get inspired to write?

True Crime stories already exist and the challenge is to find a way to weave all the police reports, court transcripts and appellate opinions into an engaging book. If it is written in legalese you will lose your readers. If it is too basic the real True Crime readers will walk away unsatisfied. Most True Crime readers are highly knowledgeable about police investigation and the world of forensics. It isn’t a matter of being inspired to write but being inspired to connect with you sophisticated readers.

What are you currently working on?

I have finished up my third book of by DA Delta Force series. For 43 years I assisted in prosecuting numerous murder cases which are full of remarkable stories. Now that I am retired I have the time to analyze each of these homicide cases to find the mini-stories which make for fascinating reading. I just published Best Of the Best DA which examines how we were able to successfully prosecute members of the Mexican Mafia and the major gangsters of Los Angeles.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Everyone thinks they have a story to tell, but are there readers who are waiting to hear that unique story? Many writers have difficulty placing themselves in the position of the reader. Aspiring writers need to listen to potential readers and learn what they are interested in. Often a great story needs hooks to continually pull the reader further into the story. The writer who knows where and when to insert the hooks will be successful.

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

True Crime story telling is more an art than a science. As an author you want to maintain your credibility with your readers, however you don’t want the reader to get lost in the weeds. It is a fine balance to give the reader enough of the facts but not become too detailed. As a writer you have the chance to tell a True Crime story in a way in which the reader gets it. That connection with the reader is rewarding.

How do you deal with writer’s block?

Many times you find your mind is not connecting the dots. I recognize that is the time to stop writing and I will pick up the research material and glance at it. Then I will find some facts that I left out which gets my mine back on track.
